Can a true scientist or philosopher believe in GOD using faith?

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

The real question:

Assuming that science/philosophy is about asking questions, challenging conventions, taking nothing for granted but constantly looking for evidence and proof/confirmation where possible… can this be compatible with faith based belief? Are religious scientists/philosophers who believe in God by virtue of “faith” guilty of double standards?

Remember to keep in mind the premise/assumption of this argument - whats the premise you say? well if you don’t know then you shouldn’t answer!
Hypothetical - I am a strongly religious person… nothing at all can shake my FAITH that God exists… reason and argument or logic or whatever have nothing to do with my Faith in God… because God is also beyond reason, beyond human ken, unfathomable… it is purely my faith that I use to believe in God.

I am also a detective trying to solve a murder case… I need to gather all the evidence, ask questions and probe into what caused this or that… I need the truth!

Is there anything wrong with this picture?
Thanks for the replies and rhetoric so far! but c’mon guys.. address the damned question or dont answer at all!
So if I say that I have faith in the “Great Spaghetti Monster” and believe in it, then am I correct. That God didn’t create us but it was the great SM? What is real and what is not? Can we use faith to figure this out? can faith solve the murder case?

Does God believe in anything by virtue of faith or does he use his omniscience?

As much as I consider and listen to opinions try and answer (any of) the questions as framed!
