Why do I have ants in my house during the winter and I am not the only one that has this problem?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

I have never had this problem before and I have lived in this house for 21 years. I do not believe they are carpenter ants. They are like the little black ones you see when the spring weather starts.

Can I expect an exterminator to do more than just spray around the perimeter of my house?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Every spring (April - November) I pay an exterminator to come every 2 months to get rid of carpenter ants in my garden and wasps out on my back deck. Am I expecting too much to think that they should look for the nests and remove them? It isn’t cheap to have them come and the ants and wasps never seem to go away permanently. Is that not possible?

How much does it cost to remodel my small kitchen?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

I live in Portland, Oregon & my house was buit in the 50s so my kitchen is pretty small. I’d like to remodel it so I can save some space and make it look more modern. I want to put in new cabinets & new countertops. I’m not too picky about getting brand names stuff. Does anyone know on average how much the whole thing would cost, part & labor? Would it be better if I hire an interior designer or just a carpenter? Or would it be cheaper to just go to like Home Depot, Costco..etc and get them to do it? Any tips on how I could save the most money would be great. I’m clueless when it comes to decorating. Thanks in advance.

How can I brighten up a large, older kitchen with inadequate windows?

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

I moved into a75-yr-old bungalow that I love, all except the kitchen. This was my grandparents’ home until they passed away, and then a rental property for several decades. The kitchen is very large, with counters, cabinets & appliances in a ‘U’ shape at the far end, and a large space for a table where you enter into it from the dining and family room. My mother had custom cabinets done by a novice carpenter 20 yrs ago. They’re honey oak, but just okay in quality. I’d love to replace them, but it’s not in the budget yet. The appliances are at least new & black. Countertops, flooring & walls are dingy shades of beige. There’s a set of small windows over the sink that let in the only natural light in the room. There was once a screened porch off the back kitchen door, & a third window in the kitchen by the eating area that let in more light. But my mom had the porch enclosed, so that window now looks out onto nothing. What techniques could I use to brighten this dreary room inexpensively?

What does a panelized house cost to build?

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I’m looking to purchase a 1000 SF panelized house by AllPro building system which will be shipped by semi to my state. Certain panels of the house are already pre-assembled in a factory environment, but, I have no idea how long it will take a general contractor/carpenter to assemble or build the real thing on site. Anyone have any ideas? It’s a moderately simple design, one floor which will either be slab on grade or sonotube/concrete footing construction.
